Created as the \u201cSyrian room\u201d for Shangri La, the floor was created to accompany the acquisition of an interior of an \u2018ataba \u2014 or reception hall \u2014 from Ottoman Damascus, dating to the middle of the 1800s. The elaborate, geometric designs of the marble tiles were created using a technique called opus sectile, or \u201cstone mosaic\u201d in which mother-of-pearl is inlaid to marble.Arriving in unmarked boxes, the jigsaw-like pieces were assembled by workmen of Hawaiʻi - and some of the resulting motifs very closely resemble traditional Hawaiian quilt patterns more than typically Ottoman geometric design."},"medium":{"label":"Medium","value":"Marble, stone inlay"},"onview":{"label":"On View","value":"1"},"title":{"label":"Title","value":"Polychrome Marble Inlaid Floor and Wall Panels"},"classification":{"label":"Classifications","value":"Stonework"},"primaryMedia":{"value":"http://collection.shangrilahawaii.org/internal/media/dispatcher/42545/full"},"displayDate":{"label":"Date","value":"c. 1800"},"width":{"label":"Width","value":"38.1000000000"},"id":{"label":"Id","value":"164825"},"dimensions":{"label":"Dimensions","value":"Overall: 312 1/8 x 15 in.
